If You Are On Coumadin And Suffer With Migraine Headaches What Medicines Can You Take That Do Not Interact With Coumadin

Answer

nelen,

Welcome to MyMigraineConnection!

You didn't say whether you were asking about abortive medications to be taken when you get a Migraine or preventive medications, so I checked on some of each.

I found no listed interactions between Coumadin and seven of the the abortive triptan and ergotamine medications. There were no listed interactions between Coumadin and Imitrex, Maxalt, Zomig, Amerge, Relpax, Axert, and Frova, but taking Treximet (a combination of Imitrex and Naproxen Sodium may increase the risk of bleeding. There were no listed interactions between Coumadin and Migranal Nasal Spray or DHE injections that you can give yourself at home.

As for preventive medications, there were no listed interactions between Coumadin and verapamil, amitriptyline, timolol, or Diamox. Coumadin and propranolol can increase the risk of bleeding. There were also warnings about Coumadin with Topamax, Effexor, Keppra, and several other possible preventive medications that I checked.

All of that said, the information obtained by checking for interactions between Coumadin and any of these medications doesn't necessarily really tell us if they're safe for you to take because that could all be changed by any other medication you take for anything including prescription medications, over-the-counter medications, and supplements. The answer could also be different because of other health issues you may have.

Only your doctor, who is familiar with you and your medical history and has access to your medical records can safely say which medications are safe for you to take. Hopefully, the checking I did for you will give the a starting point for discussing this with your doctor.

Welcome again,

Teri
