Can Crestor 20mg Tabs Be Cut In Half To Get A 10mg Daily Dose ?

I READ SOMEPLACE CUTTING THEM IN HALF WAS NOT RECCOMMENDED. V.A. GAVE THE 20MG & ADVISED TO CUT IN HALF , TO ACHIEVE A DAILY 10MG DOSE .IS THIS A STANDARD PRACTICE ?WHAT IS THE PROBLEM (IF ANY) SPLITTING THEM ?

Answer

Hi Rich,

For medications, such as Crestor, that aren't scored (have a line indented in them) it isn't the best idea to try to cut them in half. This is because you are less likely to cut the tablet into 2 truely equal pieces. Crestor is available in a 10mg tablet. However, if you do want to cut your tablets in half, I would recommend doing so with a pill cutter. As long as you cut the tablet into approximately equal pieces, there really wouldn't be a problem with doing this on your own. Always check with your doctor or pharmacist before cutting any medications in half; certain medications, such as extended release products, should never be cut in half.

Thanks for your question!
