Doctors Work to Fix Wikipedia Health Info

Anyone can contribute to articles on Wikipedia—an enormous online encyclopedia written and edited by readers. When it comes to accurate health information, that's not always a good thing. Enter Dr. James Heilman's WikiProject Medicine—a group of about 320 editors who work on improving Wikipedia's health information.

According to Dr. Heilman, about half of the group's editors are medical professionals. They work to review and improve the approximately 32,000 health-related articles written in the English language on Wikipedia.

The site is a popular source for online medical information, but the accuracy and reliability of its content is mixed and often substandard. Other efforts to improve Wikipedia's content—including health information—are also underway.
