Does Black Tea Aid Weight Loss?

The health benefits of tea – especially green tea – are well documented. Now, a new study in mice conducted by researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles suggests, for the first time, that black tea can also promote weight loss and provide other health perks.

The study involved four groups of mice. One group was fed a low-fat, high-sugar diet and one was fed a high-sugar, high-fat diet. The other two groups were fed a high-sugar, high-fat diet supplemented with either green tea extract or black tea extract. After four weeks, the mice given green or black tea extract weighed the same as those that received a low-fat diet.

According to the researchers, black tea increases energy metabolism in the liver by altering substances in the digestive system. Both the black tea and green tea changed the ratio of intestinal bacteria in the laboratory mice, resulting in a decrease in bacteria associated with obesity and an increase in bacteria associated with lean body mass. Results of the study were published in the European Journal of Nutrition.
