Does Methotrexate Cause Breast Cancer?

I have been on methotrexate for 3 years and have been diagnosed with breast cancer could this be a result of taking this drug?

Answer

Hi lindylou,

I'm very sorry to hear that you've been diagnosed with breast cancer. You may want to check out our page for Newly Diagnosed patients on the Breast Cancer website.

I know that taking methotrexate can increase the risk of developing blood cancers such as lymphoma or leukemia, but I don't know about breast cancer specifically. My rheumatologist describes being on some of the immune-suppressing drugs as having your "watch dogs chained up" so that the body doesn't fight off things that don't belong as easily.
