Does Taking Antibiotics Raise Fasting Blood Glucose Values?

Im a home healthcare RN and two pts this week have said that they do..Ive never heard this before. I know infection can rains FBG values..but antibiotics too? Tnx, Beth

Answer

I looked around and some resources said yes they do, but gave no conclusive information about which ones and why. I also wonder if it is the infection causing the increase, if the dose isn't cutting thru the infection yet, it could be that the blood glucose is reflecting the issue. But across the board it appears that most research says highs and lows are to be expected with antibiotics. (Lows I've experienced, highs I always associated with infection.)
