Does Your Mascara Contain Toxic Ingredients ?

Shopping for mascara can be overwhelming, Not only will mascara choices vary, but brush length and shapes too.

Mascara comes in thickening formulas, lengthening formulas and anti-clumping formulas. Some brushes can be curved, long and straight, or short and straight.

Longer brushes will allow for easier application of the mascara. Curved brushes push top lashes upward for more curl. The formulas above are relatively self-explanatory, but buying a product with the safest ingredient should be your prime concern.

Mascaras can be divided in two groups: water resistant mascaras (often labeled waterproof) and non-water resistant mascaras.

Water resistant mascaras have a composition based on a volatile solvent (isododecane - an isomer of dodecane), animal-derived waxes (beeswax), vegetal based waxes (carnauba wax rice bran wax, candelila wax), mineral origin wax (ozokerite, paraffin) pigments (iron oxide, ultramarine) and filmifying polymers. These mascaras do not contain water-sensitive moieties, offering an excellent resistance to tears, sweat or rain. As a result, these mascaras can only be removed with a specific make-up remover, able to dilute the dried mascara film.

Non water-resistant mascaras are based on water, soft surfactants (like triethanolamine stearate), animal-derived waxes (beeswax) , vegetal based waxes (carnauba wax , ( rice bran wax, candelilla wax), mineral origin waxes (ozokerite, paraffin), pigments (iron oxide, ultramarine), thickening polymers (gum arabic, hydrophobically modified cellulose) and on preservatives. These mascaras can run under the effect of tears, but are easily removed with some soap and water.

Waterproof mascaras are similar to oil-based or solvent-based paints. Non water-resistant mascaras behave like water based paints. For intermediate water sensitivity, mascaras and latex-based paints (acrylates) contain polymer dispersions.

The major mascara ingredients, companies come up with different formulas for their products. This is to distinguish each one from their competitors in the cosmetics industry. Big players that include Estee Lauder, Avon, L'Oreal, Maybe line, and Lancôme have developed their own mascara formula mix.

Some people get a nasty allergic reaction to mascara . So watch out for High Hazard ingredients like Methylparaben, Aluminum Powder, Ceteareth -20, and Butylparaben and Benzyl Alcohol .   Personally,   I would not want to put these ingredients anywhere near my eyes

The eyes in most people react to certain chemicals and, unfortunately for some, there are some types of mascara which come into close contact with the eyes, and can do the damage, resulting in conjunctivitis, styes, swollen lids or even just runny eyes.

If you find that after using certain makes of mascara you get an unpleasant reaction, , try and find a non allergic brand which might be a better choice.

Its just basically trial and error, but if you suffer from a severe attack you must stop using any eye makeup products immediately and consult with your physician.
