Can I Drink Alcohol While Taking Cipro?
I have recently been prescribed the antibiotic Cipro and I was wondering if it's all right to drink alcohol while taking it.
Answer
There is not a warning to avoid alcohol while taking Cipro (ciprofloxacin). However, it is important to stay hydrated while taking this drug, as one of the known side effects is crystalluria, which is small stones in the urine (similar to kidney stones). Alcohol can often lead to dehydration, which will increase the risk of developing these small stones, so it's probably best to avoid alcohol while taking this medication.
Also, because alcohol can affect the pathways Cipro uses to treat infection in the body, it can make the drug less effective. Because of this and possible risks of increased dehydration, it's best to wait until your infection is cleared and you're off the medication before taking that drink.
