I Have Drops Of Milk Coming Out Of My Nipples Although I Am Not Breastfeeding

I had my child at 23 and I stopped beastfeeding her when she was 1 but if I squeeze my nipples I still have milk coming out, I went to see the doctor a year after I stopped breastfeeding and he said it's nothing serious, it could be a hormone imbalance but now it's been 7 years and I'm starting to get worried. Please help!!

Answer

Hi Sindi: Nipple discharge (including milk) can be from a huge number of causes. Most aren't serious; if the discharge was bloody you might worry, but white/milky discharge isn't usually a breast cancer symptom. You might find our article on nipple discharge useful. As it indicates, you might just have galactorrhea, which can signal a hormonal imbalance somewhere in your system. At any rate, ask your GP to refer you to a breast specialist, who can surely nail down what's causing this condition. Good luck - PJH
