I Have A Dull Ache/pain In My Breast. What Could This Be?

It's in my left armpit/left breast, and it's been going on for about 3 weeks. Could you please give me some advice on what this might be?

Answer

Fibrocystic change, a painful though basically harmless condition common in pre-menopausal women, can produce all kinds of aches and pains in and around the breast and chest, from soreness to sharp pain, as well as the aching you describe. It's often connected with your menstrual cycle, with the pain worst just before your period. Fibrocystic change is characterized by cysts, fluid filled sacs; and fibroadenomas, which are benign (non-cancerous) breast tumors. Some women report relief from pain when they cut caffeine out of their diet; if you're a coffee, tea, or cola drinker, you might consider this.

Breast cancer is usually painless, so this generalized aching doesn't sound like a breast cancer symptom. Please read our post on  breast pain;  I think it'll give you the information you need to decide whether/when you should see a doctor about this.
