Eat Nuts to Live Longer
The health benefits of nuts—from almonds and walnuts, to Brazil nuts and peanuts (technically, legumes)—have been well studied and documented. Nuts contain healthy fats, fiber, vitamins, and minerals, and can help protect against chronic diseases. Now, research has shown that nuts can be especially healthy for older adults.
According to this research, older adults who eat nuts regularly may have a lower risk for heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and cancer, then those who don't eat nuts. Eating nuts also can help prevent dementia and cognitive decline, reduce joint pain, and help maintain a healthy weight.
The most important benefit of eating nuts is heart health—heart disease is the number one cause of death in men and women in the U.S. In one study, men and women who ate a serving of nuts most days for 30 years were 29% less likely to die from heart disease.
