Eating Fish May Reduce Depression Risk
Here's another benefiti to adding fish to your diet--it may help reduce your risk of depression.
A new study, published in the Journal of Epidemiology & Community Health, involved a meta analysis of 16 articles published between 2001 and 2014. These articles included data from 26 studies and 150,278 participants.
Researchers found that there was a strong relationship between high fish intake and a drop in depression risk by 17 percent, compared to low fish consumption. Even when studying men and women separately, they found the effects were the same, with depression being reduced by 20 percent in men and 16 percent in women.
The scientists believe that our biology may explain why fish has this effect. High levels of omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil, they say, may alter levels of dopamine and serotonin in our body, both which help regulate mood and depression. Fish also offer high quality protein, as well as vitamins and minerals that may have a, “protective effect on depression.”
