Is Emphysema Reversible?

Question

Asked by N Griffin

Is Emphysema Reversible?

I've just been diagnosed with "a small amount of emphysema." Is this reversible? I am not a smoker, though I did smoke moderately 40 years ago.

Answer

Most experts agree that emphysema is not reversible with current treatments once symptoms appear. But these same treatments can greatly slow the progression of the disease in most patients. You might discuss the treatments and your own prognosis with your pulmonologist or cardiologist to see which one is the best for you.
