Extreme Burning Itching Under The Skin Along With Deep Pain Seemingly In The Joint Or Bone.

I am currently having extreme burning and itching under the skin, along with deep pain seemingly in the joint or bone. There is no rash or hives. It is under the skin in the tissue and it's been going on for over a month now. I have it in my feet, toes, hands, fingers and sometimes knees. It is the worst in the late afternoon/evening. The area swells up and is red when affected. I am concerned because my father had both MS and Rheumatoid Arthritis. I don't know if it's applicable, but I've recently started running, and the symptoms started a few days after my last race.

Answer

Hi Mickal,

Descriptions of burning and itching skin are very common in MS. These are called dysesthesias and are sometimes treated with anti-seizure medications such as neurontin.

Since you are experiencing unusual-for-you symptoms, it would be a good idea to consult your physician. Prepare for your visit by writing down the history of your symptoms. Also, do mention that your father has MS and RA.

Anecdotally, I've used ice and heat (at different times) to lessen the effect of these odd sensations. It helps temporarily.
