Can Flomax Cause Decreased Sperm Production Or Motility In Men?

My husband and I are trying to conceive and he is on Flomax regularly for a kidney stone. Is there any chance it could interfere with our chances of getting pregnant?

Answer

Hi,

Thanks for your question. Yes, Flomax can indeed cause a decrease in the amount of semen that a man produces--that is actually one of the more common questions we get on our site. You might want to check out this article: Avodart, Flomax, and Decreased Ejaculate: When Will it Stop?

In it, Dr. Motola writes, "Flomax may be associated with abnormal ejaculation, including not being able to ejaculate, decreased ejaculate and retrograde ejaculation. However, these side effects are not permanent and should be reversible after stopping the drug. Be patient....!"

If you think this might interfere with your ability to conceive, your husband should talk to his doctor about starting an alternative treatment that does not have the same side effects as Flomax, or temporarily going off the drug when trying to conceive.

Hope this helps!
