My weight had gotten the better of me in a number of areas. I did not feel attractive, I tired easily, and my health was beginning to deteriorate. Diet and exercise had failed me a number of times or perhaps had I failed diet and exercise. Whichever it was, the end result was the same: Nothing changed. I remained obese, I did not feel attractive, I tired easily, and my health was deteriorating.
When being assigned yet another diet by my doctor, he explained in a nutshell the details of my latest weight loss program. He asked if I was aware of all foods I particularly liked, and then told me I couldn’t eat them anymore.
There was a certain logic to it all. Fried foods would have to go. Candies and sweets in general would have to go. Desserts should be off the menu. High cal beverages weren’t exactly helping either.
I summoned my willpower, adjusted my focus, got positive in my attitude, dug in my heels, and failed almost immediately. So much for the victory lap.
Gastric bypass surgery changed everything. The weight came off, esteem went up, attitude improved, health improved. And, oh yes, all those foods I like. Well, I did not like the majority of them anymore, having a preference for healthful natural foods.
The Gastric Bypass Diet After Surgery
The diet phases that follow gastric bypass surgery must be adhered to regimentally. Recommendations are made in large part to support healing and rebound from the weight loss surgery.
The liquid diet that immediately follows surgery will transition into a diet of pureed foods. Soft solid foods come next, and solid foods are after that. Even at this stage, the last before a return to a normal diet, certain foods are to be avoided including nuts and seeds, popcorn, dried fruits, granola, and bread.
Some of these foods may be eaten after the gastric bypass patient resumes a normal diet.
Once again, the important thing to remember is that the foods recommended during the period of convalescence are recommended to enhance recovery prospects and protect the immediate health of the bariatric patient. Avoiding foods other than those recommended is imperative for healing.
Foods to Avoid After Gastric Bypass Surgery
High calorie foods are to be avoided after gastric bypass surgery. Fatty or sugared foods can promote dumping syndrome. The part of the small intestine where sugar and fat are digested has been bypassed during weight loss surgery. Sugar and fat are therefore broken down elsewhere in the intestines and can be responsible for uncomfortable digestion.
Food to avoid are fried foods, fast foods, a number of fruit juices, milkshakes, candies, and pastries.
Difficult to digest foods such as rice, peanut butter, and tougher meats are to be avoided because they can stick in the opening that is between the stomach and the intestines.
Alcohol should also be avoided after weight loss surgery. Gastric bypass patients have much lower resistance to alcohol after weight loss surgery. A study conducted at Stanford University showed that gastric bypass patients
took 40 minutes longer to metabolize alcohol than non-patients.
