Been On Forteo For 22 Months. Need A Tooth Extracted. Are There Any Dangers ?

Answer

Hi Patzee, welcome to the community. Forteo does not cause jaw bone problems with tooth extractions. Bisphosphonates (Fosamax, Reclast, Boniva, and Actonel) can "possibly" cause this to happen but the incidence of this is low, unless you've had cancer and then the risk is slightly higher.

Forteo is a man made form of parathyroid hormone, so it's in a completely different class of drugs than bisphosphonates. If you've taken a bisphosphonate at some point, you need to mention this to the oral surgeon, but if not Forteo by itself is not a drug that causes this problem. Actually some Drs are using Forteo after dental implants and extractions to help speed the healing process, "if" the patient took a bisphosphonate for many years (5 or more).

Good luck with your extraction, and double check this information with your surgeon.
