Grab Your Tennis Racquet, Live Longer?
According to a recent study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, playing racquet sports like tennis, squash, or badminton can cut your risk of death from any cause—including heart attack and stroke—by 47 percent. In this study, typical workouts like running or jogging didn't show the same benefits.
Researchers examined data from a number of health surveys performed in England and Scotland from 1994 to 2008 and involving more than 80,000 adults. Study participants were asked a series of questions about the type and intensity of physical activities they had participated in over the course of the past four weeks. Then, the survival of the participants—who averaged 52 years of age—was tracked for nine years.
According to the study, racquet sports cut mortality risk almost in half, while swimming resulted in 28 percent lower risk and bicycling, a 15 percent lower risk. Researchers say the study emphasizes the benefits of aerobic exercise along with strength training—endurance and strong muscles—for good health.
