I was lifting a heavy object and heard a cracking/popping sound in my lower back and now I'm in a lot of pain. What can I do to ease the pain, and how can I tell if it's serious? It hurts to move in any direction.

Answer

A popping or snapping sound associated with sudden pain can be the sound of a muscle tear and it is something that should be checked out by a doctor. Given that you're in alot of pain that seems like a good idea. For home relief you might want to try anti-inflammatories and ice - up to 20 minutes at a time - to bring down the inflammation and reduce the pain.

Good luck!
