Heart Rate 135

My brother was buried today and there is a lot of family stress --I have taken a low dose diltizam that I am supposed to take for a heart rate of over 100 and I took a 1mg Xanax about 2 hours ago. My heart rate is still not coming down. I am a 47 year old female and home alone. Do I need to go to the hospital, can I drive myself?

Answer

Hi sandymajor,

I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your brother. Stress is a common cause of elevated heart rate, along with certain medications and other stimulants such as caffeine. Here is a link to some information that may help explain things.

Since you did take 2 medications and also have the added stress, I suggest you call your physician and be seen.

Best of luck,
