Helping Someone You Love Through Depression When They Have Shut You Out.

Answer

Hi, Tanya. A lot of people have asked this question and the answer is, you can't. You can be there for them, but you have to set boundaries so you don't get swallowed up in it, too. This is especially true if the person is refusing to get any professional help or to do anything else to help him/herself. Most of us are not skilled enough to truly help someone deal with their depression. You have to decide at some point how long you can tolerate the situation if nothing is improving. Don't put your life on hold and talk to a therapist yourself if you need help with this.

Many people try to deal with their depression by shutting out everyone who is close to them, partly because they feel they have failed in some way, or are "bad" because they are depressed. They may feel a lot of shame about needing help. You can talk to them about this and encourage them to get help, but beyond that, it's up to them.

I wish you all the best and hope things work out the way you want them to. Let us know if we can be of any further help.
