Here's Why You Should Avoid Cosmetic Counter Testers
Soon, shopping malls everywhere will be filled with holiday deal-seekers. As you hit the stores searching for gifts for family and friends – or a little something for yourself – you may want to avoid using beauty product testers, which can be a breeding ground for germs.
Although cosmetics contain preservatives to slow the growth of bacteria, writes Amreen Bashir on CNN, the products can be contaminated when people use non-sterile applicators or their fingers to apply them, or when they are improperly stored. Brushes used to apply cosmetics can also promote bacteria growth, especially if they are dampened to improve application.
Possible dangers from using contaminated beauty products range from conjunctivitis (pink eye) to serious bacterial infections and even herpes. So, put on your makeup before heading out the door, keep your cosmetics and beauty products clean, and use single applicators whenever possible.
