Highest Dating Violence Rates: LGB Teens

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention conducted the first national study of lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) teens, finding higher-than-average rates of physical and sexual violence in bullying in this population. According to the CDC, LBG high school students are three times more likely to be raped and twice as likely to experience dating violence compared to heterosexual teens.

The study surveyed 15,000 public and private high school students around the country and asked about sexual identity, sexual contacts, and more than 100 health behaviors. The study revealed a number of alarming results.

Bullying is twice as common in LGB teens and rates of physical and sexual violence are significantly higher. More than 40% of LGB teens have considered suicide, and an astonishing 29% have attempted suicide in the past month.
