Hone These Life Skills to Improve Your Health
Adults with certain life skills experience several health benefits and more positive outcomes later in life, according to a new study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. These important qualities include: conscientiousness, control, determination (persistence), emotional stability, and optimism.
According to researchers, these life skills, which are relevant to many aspects of life, are beneficial—regardless of other factors, such as cognitive abilities, education, and socioeconomic background—and can increase success and well-being throughout life. They play an important role in economic prosperity, social relationships, and health and wellness over the course of a lifetime.
While earlier studies showed the five life skills are important factors in young adulthood—for achievement in education, advancement at work, and the development of relationships, for example—little was known about their potential benefits in older age. Results of this recent study suggest these personal characteristics are beneficial well into the golden years.
