How Tai Chi Relieves Neck Pain
Neck pain is one of the most common types of chronic pain in adults in the U.S. According to a new study, Tai Chi—a form of low-impact, mind-body exercise—is as effective as the neck exercises often used to treat persistent pain in this area of the body.
The study, which was conducted by an international team of researchers, was recently published in the American Pain Society’s The Journal of Pain. It involved 114 participants who had chronic neck pain for at least three consecutive months.
After 12 weeks, Tai Chi reduced pain, decreased disability, and improved quality of life better than no treatment and as effectively as traditional neck exercises. Previous research also supports Tai Chi as an effective treatment for back pain, arthritis, and certain psychological disorders.
