When a new medical device, drug or treatment is being developed, researchers must undertake a lengthy process that involves various steps and numerous participants. Clinical trials make up the bulk of this process and are comprised of four phases designed to answer a separate research question and move the device, drug or treatment one step closer to being approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
