Is Infection Behind Alzheimer’s?

A new study indicates that Alzheimer’s may be caused by the buildup of a protein in the brain that’s left over when the body fights off disease.

Research published in the Journal Science Translational Medicine hints that the amyloid beta protein may build up as the brain is dealing with an infection. It may be more common for infections to reach the brain as people age, so the plaque buildup would be more likely in the elderly.

It's that plaque that seems to cause memory problems in Alzheimer’s patients.

If the study is confirmed, doctors would have a new avenue to treat Alzheimer’s, by attempting to lower amyloid protein levels.
