I was just told that my cholesterol is 233. Is that high? My doctor wants to put me on simvastatin.

Answer

Cholesterol that is over 200 is considered elevated, yes. However, you should look at your lab results to see what the breakdown of your numbers (LDL, HDL, and triglycerides) is so you have a better idea of other, natural ways to lower your cholesterol.

You can lower levels with diet/lifestyle changes and potentially avoid medication. Which component is high helps determine what diet changes will have the greatest impact.

Your Checklist to Lower Cholesterol

If the only option discussed with your doctor was medication, consider contacting him/her to discuss whether or not your could make diet/lifestyle changes over the next 4-6 weeks and have your levels retested prior to determining if the medication is the best choice.
