Ldl Level Is 174, Hdl Level Is 48. Is This A Dangerous Ratio?

Have gone from 340 lbs. to 288 lbs. since April of this year and have changed my eating habits to healthier ones and am walking every day (hence the weight loss). I plan to continue losing weight until I reach a healthy weight of 140 to 145 lbs. My doctor wants me to take cholesterol lowering medicine, but I would really like to avoid taking more medicine. Am currently on Diovan for b/p (which has been normal consistently) and Klonopin (anti-anxiety). Female. 52 years old.

Answer

Hi E. B.,

Great job losing 52 pounds in the past 9 months! The weight loss should have positively impacted your cholesterol levels and will continue to do so as you lose additional weight.

Your LDL to HDL ratio is 3.625. You want a ratio less than 3.5, ideally less than 2.5. To calculate your ratio, divide LDL by HDL.

It's best to consult with your MD to determine if medication is the appropriate step for you.
