My Legs Are Getting Weaker, Is There Anything I Can Do?

Hi: I have relapsing and remitting MS. I was diagnosed about 3 years ago. I force myself to stay active by walking our dog 2 x per day and I do a lot of work around the house and yard as we have 3 cats and a dog. I can't ride a bike or run but I do fine walking most times. There are times I walk around like I am drunk, that is when I should lay down but I don't always do that. Yesterday when I went to a movie with my husband and walked up two flights of stairs. I didn't think I was going to make it and had to stop at the end of each flight. That was scary!! I am pretty active. We even have a small above ground pool that I work out in. I guess I just don't know what to do. If you have any ideas please let me know. Thank you!!

Hi Cheryl,

Also keep in mind that the weather can affect MS as well. Humidity affects my ability to walk. I just returned from a wonderful trip to San Diego where the humidity was LOW and I felt great - didn't even need to nap! As soon as I returned to NJ my legs became weaker. Perhaps you are affected by the differences in temperature and humidity as well. Just a thought.

Also, if your problems persists, remember the importance of speaking with your doctor. Perhaps he or she can recommend either medications or alternative options like acupuncture, yoga or (as Lisa said) PT. It's always good to speak with your doctor about any changes in your MS.

Good luck with everything, and keep us posted!

Best in health,
