Less Salt Will Be on the Menu
The Obama administration wants food makers to use less salt, so it just issued voluntary guidelines aimed at limiting the sodium content of prepared and processed foods.
“The totality of scientific evidence, as reviewed by many well-respected scientific organizations, continues to support lowering sodium consumption from current levels,” The FDA’s Susan Mayne says. She adds there’s so much sodium in food, it’s difficult for an average eater to stay within the guidelines.
Americans eat more than a teaspoon of salt each day, on average. High sodium consumption is linked to high blood pressure and strokes.
The guidelines are voluntary and will be phased in over several years. But expect to see less sodium in your food soon.
