Light Red Rash And Itch On Both Breasts & Nipples

About a week ago the sides of both breasts and my nipples began to itch. That's when I noticed a very light red rash on both of my breasts, but only on the sides. Sometimes the itch is SO bad I can hardly stand it. Then it goes away and I'm fine for several hours, then it starts up again. These itching outbreaks last anywhere from 15-30 minutes. There's no pain at all ... just terrible itching, no lumps, no discharge. I've tried prescription cortisone cream but it didn't help the itch or the rash. I'm 39 years old and have never had anything like this before.

I haven't changed laundry soap, shower gel/soap, new bra ... nothing I can think of. But, the day before this started I went in our pool about 15 minutes after my husband shocked it and added chlorine (I didn't know he had done it). That's the only thing I can think of, out of the ordinary.

Answer

Hi - Since this is affecting both breasts, it would be very unusual indeed for it to have anything to do with cancer, which generally affects just one breast at a time. Have you thought of seeing a dermatologist? Could be you're having a reaction to the chlorine, as you mentioned. It sounds very uncomfortable; you'd probably better see your PCP, in order to get a referral to a dermatologist, or whomever he/she thinks could identify the source of this and treat it. Good luck - PJH
