Log In and Calm Down?

It’s difficult to settle a child down before surgery. But a new study suggests taking a digital approach.

Researchers studied the anxiety levels of both parents and children under 10 before and after an operation that required sedation. The study indicates that allowing the children to use an iPad was as calming before they went under the knife as using a conventional sedative would be.

The report is to be released at a conference of anesthesiologists in Hong Kong this week. As a further benefit, it was easier to put the children under anesthesia and the parents were happier with the outcome when their child used an iPad.

Digital devices have been criticized for affecting the brain as a drug would. This is, perhaps, a possible benefit of that.
