How Long Does It Take For Prozac To Take Effect

My husband seems to blow up over the least little thing. He just seems to be mad a lot of the time, and not happy like he used to be. I think he is suffering from some depression and anxiety. The Doctor just started him on Prozac. Will this help him? And how long will it be before we can tell if it's working or not?

Answer

Nickie - It is very important to try to identify when the change in his demeanor occurred and what was happening around that time. While you may be right that he is experiencing depression and/or anxiety, knowing the causes can be important in determining the proper treatment. If he has not been seen by a mental health professional you may want to encourage him to do so in order to determine if medication is necessary.

Prozac might turn out to be quite helpful but as Suffolk pointed out it could be 3 weeks or more before the full effects might be apparent. Fortunately, some folks experience some benefits earlier than three weeks and you might notice an improvement in his temper within the first 10 - 14 days.
