How Long After Taking Do Blood Pressure Med Start To Work And How Long Do They Last

My mother, 89 takes all her blood pressure med at night, toprol, cardizem, vasatec, Her bloodpressure is high at night and ok in day. The Doctor told her to start taking meds in the morn but she won't do it because she says it would get too low in day. I tried to explain that if she hadn't taken it the night before and then took it in the morning that wouldn't happen. Sometimes she checks it in the night and it is high and she takes a clonidine too. She has weak spells every morning and I think it is because of all the med she took the night before. she is very stubborn so what is happening when she takes meds at night?

Answer

Hi Crockpot,

A pharmacist would be a good resource to learn the "life" of the blood pressure medications. I also recommend discussing with your mothers physician. He/she may want to adjust the medications if they knew she wasn't follow the treatment plan to take the meds in the morning.
