My lower back was hurting bad the other day, and now the pain is in my buttocks and right leg. The right leg is tingly and it feels numb and heavy when I walk. What could this be?

Answer

You could have a condition called sciatica. Sciatica occurs when pressure is put on a nerve that runs from your lower spine down the side of each leg. You can experience pain, tingling or other sensations in your hip, leg and butt and they can vary from day to day.

Sciatica is pretty common. If it is sciatica it often resolves on its own. You might try ice or heat on the painful areas, ibuprofen or tylenol and sleeping on your side with a pillow between your legs.

If it doesn't resolve with a week or two you should see a doctor and get the appropriate treatment. Sciatica can be caused by several different things and it can get quite painful; you definitely want to nip it in the bud.

I believe I had sciatica at one time that resolved either with time or with stretching exercises to relieve the pressure on my lower back. Wearing shoes with good support and good posture are two other things you can do help reduce pressure on your lower back.

Good luck!
