Migraine And Cortisone Injections

I'm a bit past middle age and sometimes get cortisone injections in my knees because of arthritis. I've noticed that for about a week following these injections I have migraine trouble and have to take my medication (Imitrex) every day. Do others have this problem, too? Can I do anything to prevent this? I also have insomnia at this time.

Answer

Hi Lou,

"Headache" is listed as a side effect of cortisone injections. Something to keep in mind is that if we take Migraine abortive meds such as triptans (like Imitrex) or any kind of pain med more than two days a week, a big part of the problem may well be medication overuse headache (MOH), aka rebound. See Medication Overuse Headache - When the Remedy Backfires for more information on this.

Good luck

Nancy
