Mom's RA May Raise Your Chronic Disease Risk

Children born to mothers with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are at increased risk for certain chronic medical problems, according to results of a recent study conducted in Denmark and published in Arthritis Care & Research. For the long-term study, researchers at Odense University Hospital followed all children born in Denmark over a 25-year period, including 2,106 children born to women with RA, and 1,378,539 children born to women without the autoimmune disease.

Children and adolescents whose mothers were diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis before pregnancy had a higher risk of developing thyroid disease (2.2 times higher than normal), epilepsy (1.6 times higher), and RA (2.9 times higher).
