More good news about red wine

Let us all toast this holiday season to even more evidence of the health benefits of red wine.

While a number of studies have found cardiovascular benefits of resveratrol, a compound found in  red wine, a new study by scientists at the Scripps Research Institute in California suggests that it also stimulates a stress response gene and that switches on protective genes associated with longevity.

The study, published in the journal Nature, contradicts other research suggesting that the health benefits of resveratrol have been overblown. The Scripps study concludes the even consuming moderate amounts of red wine will provide enough of the compound to effectively activate these genes associated with helping people live longer.
