More people getting too much sleep
For all the talk about no one getting enough sleep, it seems that a lot of people may actually be getting too much sleep, according to a study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology.
The findings are based on an analysis of studies on the sleeping habits of people in 10 different countries. They determined that the number of people getting at least nine hours of sleep each night rose from 28 percent in 1985 to 37 percent in 2007. They also found that the number of people who get less than six hours of sleep each night fell from 11 percent in 1985 to 9 percent in 2007.
Though there are a lot of potential consequences to getting too little sleep, too much sleep also can cause health problems. Studies show that getting more than nine hours of sleep each night for adults is linked to an increased risk of heart disease, thinking problems and premature death.
