StomaphyX is a rather uncomfortable procedure, and I share some of the discomfort I experienced in this post. I actually kept a diary of my entire 8-week recovery period, listing my discomfort with my pouch, my joy in losing weight, and the foods I ate and exercise I did. However to post that week by week account would get rather repetitious and make for a rather dull read, I suspect.
I’ll share week 4 with you because I think it is rather interesting. I hit milestones like fitting into my size 12 jeans. I experienced difficulties such as continuous belching.
At the end of this post, I will share my final outcome with the procedure.
StomaphyX Post Op Day 22 This morning I weighed myself in at 188.5lbs, a 1.5lb weight loss since yesterday.
I had some difficulties yesterday with post StomaphyX surgical pain. It began after I had eaten the scrambled egg with cheese for lunch. I began belching continuously and was having pain and tightness in my stomach. It was very odd because if I touched my stomach area it actually feels sore – like sore muscles after you work out. I don’t think that this can be from my walking on the elliptical the previous day???
Hours after eating the egg I was still uncomfortable but I needed to consume my vitamins and medications. I quartered the pills – there were quite a few of them – and took several of the quartered pieces at a time, consuming them over four intervals. My stomach continued to hurt through the night even when I drank iced tea. I was unable to eat but only 3 oz of yogurt late night but that was it. This changed my nutritional profile to: 570 calories 21.5g fat 43g carbs 51g protein.
One of the vitamins I took was calcium with oyster shell. I am wondering if it is just too hard on my StomaphyX right now. Or if it was simply the volume of pills. Or if it was the egg. Or everything combined??? I’ll need to contact my surgeon and ask his advice.
In the meantime, my stomach still hurts this morning and I plan to consume only liquids today. I am consuming my morning protein drink as I type this and am again belching continuously. As far as the quandry I found myself in as whether to follow my surgeons advice or my nutritionist’s advice on what and how much to eat, I no longer have to decide but rather God or the universe has made the decision for me… I now have no choice but to eat lightly and as a result will consume less calories.
Here is my plan for today although this may need to be modified should I experience increased pain.
B: 1 scoop ON gold standard whey chocolate blenderized with 1c vanilla soy milk, 4 squirts of Da Vinci SF caramel syrup, 2 tbs instant coffe crystals, and ice. I’ll also take my liquid/powdered/sublingual vitamins but I am not taking any pills even quartered.
L: 1/2c chicken broth pureed with 1.25 slice soft tofu and spices. 1 scoop Syntrax powder mixed with a few drops water.
D: 1/2c chicken broth pureed with 1.25 slice soft tofu and spices. 1 scoop Syntrax powder mixed with a few drops water.
Metabolic: 1 scoop ON gold standard whey blenderized with 2 oz soy milk, 1.5 tbs natural creamy peanut butter and ice. This is my recipe for protein chocolate peanut butter ice cream (sorta). Note that after having consumed this last meal my stomach is again bothering me and I have a headache. I will have to stick with pure liquids tomorrow.
This provides 899 calories 27g fat 41g carbs 128g protein
StomaphyX Post Op Day 23 This morning I weighed myself in at 186.5lbs, a 2lb weight loss since yesterday. My total weight loss following StomaphyX just 3 weeks ago is 18.5lbs and my BMI is now 29.21.
I heard from my StomaphyX surgeon about my experience with pain. He said, “I’m actually glad to hear that you’re having trouble with solids, which means that the StomaphyX procedure is working well. Stay on pureed foods and liquids a bit longer. This will only result in greater wt loss post StomaphyX and give your stomach time to constrict to its new smaller size. Don’t worry about vitamins at this time. You can skip them for weeks or months without any issues. Congrats on the weight loss.” So, I will stick with liquids since yesterday the soft food hurt my stomach. I also am eliminating the meds and pill-type vitamins. Any meds I have to take will need to be crushed or the capsules emptied. Note that not all meds can be crushed or capsules emptied so check with your physician or surgeon. I am fortunate that the meds I take can be taken this way, although the taste is AWFUL
Following my breakfast and coffee today I find that my stomach is tight and sore. I may have to slow down and take smaller sips until I am better healed.
Here is my meal plan for today.
B: 1 scoop Syntrax protein powder fuzzy navel blenderized with 1/3 Profect protein bullet, magnesium citrate, liquid vitamins, ice, 8oz Spring water. I’ll also take sublingual vit B12.
Mid morning: 10oz coffee with 4 Splenda and 1/3c half and half.
L: 1/2c chicken broth with pureed silken tofu 1.25 slices and seasonings. The broth pureed together with the tofu makes a protein rich and tasteful meal.
D: 1/2c chicken broth with pureed silken tofu 1.25 slices and seasonings.
Early eve: 2 SF popsicles
Metabolic: Protein Jello made with 1/2c SF jello and 1/2 scoop Syntrax protein powder strawberry kiwi.
I also will strive to sip water and Crystal light throughout the day to get 64oz total. In addition, I commit to do a mild 30 minute walk on the elliptical.
This plan provides 464 calories 15g fat 23g carbs 59g protein. Note that this turned out to be too little food. Please see posting for Day 24.
StomaphyX Post Op Day 24
Woo hoo! I put my size 12 jeans on today.
Note that ~500 calories yesterday turned out to be too little food. I ate 1c of the soup for dinner and added a 6oz container of FF yogurt at night. I should have stopped there but late at night I ate 3oz of cheese doodles! I think that what led up to this slip at night was eating too little food during the day and starving my body.
500 calories I think is unhealthy for me from an emotional perspective, being that I had anorexia as a teenager and pretty much one eating disorder or another all of my life. Even if my StomaphyX surgeon said that physicially it is OK to do this short term, I just think that I am playing with fire. If I eat 500 calories it is pretty likely that I’ll lose more weight more quickly, which I feel may reinforce an old behavior I had (and which is still lurking somewhere in my mind) that starvation is a good way to lose weight. I really do not want to fall back into that insanity… it was very hard to get out of it. I seem to be able to tolerate liquids and the occassional soft food and will stick with those through the StomaphyX healing process. As far as quantity of food it seems that I can consume about 800 calories without my StomaphyX bothering me as long as I stick with the liquids and occassional soft foods (like maybe 1 meal a day for now).
Here is my meal plan for today.
B: 1 scoop Syntrax protein powder fuzzy navel blenderized with 1tbs magnesium citrate, 2oz liquid vitamins, ice, 8oz Spring water. I’ll also take sublingual vit B12 and my meds.
Mid morning: 8oz coffee with 4 Splenda and 1/3c half and half.
L: 1 scoop ON gold standard whey protein chocolate blenderized with 8oz coffee, 1tbs instnat coffee crystals, 8oz vanilla soy milk, 2 shots of SF davinci caramel syrup, ice.
D: 1/3c ricotta cheese mixed with 2oz tomato sauce and fresh minced basil leaves and 1 tbs grated cheeseEarly eve: .75 scoop Syntrax strawberry kiwi mixed with 8oz water
Metabolic: 1/2c onion soup pureed
I also will strive to sip water and Crystal light throughout the day to get 64oz total. In addition, I commit to do a mild 30 minute walk on the elliptical, plus “sight-seeing type” walking for a few hours.
This plan provides 788 calories 28g fat 45g carbs 93g protein.
StomaphyX Post Op Day 25 I have finally reached 185lbs today. I am excited because this is the weight that I was up until Dec 2007. In spite of my efforts to lose those extra pounds since then, I was unsuccessful in reaching my goal until I had the StomaphyX surgery. StomachPhyx accomplished for me in 4 weeks what I could not do on my own in 9 months. My BMI is just below 29 at 28.97. I feel so much better about myself.
We are going sight seeing again and I’ll get in lots of leisurely walking. I left the house early and did not commit a meal plan for today. I decided to “wing it.” This is a big no-no with OA. And for good reason… I ended up eating too many calories and fat and carbs even though I thought that I had chosen wisely.
It is always important to remember that this StomaphyX surgery is a tool, not a cure, for obesity. StomaphyX surgery alone will not give me the results I want. I must be committed to a new lifestyle and the behavioral changes associated with it for the rest of my life. This includes planning my food everyday on fitday.com and comitting it to my OA sponsor.

L: 4 pieces of fried tofu with 1oz hot sauce and 1tbs blue cheese dressing (a vegetarian version of hot wings)

D: 4 pieces of fried tofu with 1oz hot sauce and 1tbs blue cheese dressing (leftovers from my lunch ordered at a restaurant), 1 glass of red wine
Metabolic: 1 scoop Syntrax whey nectar fuzzy navel mixed with a little water to make a taffy
This meal provides… this is surprising to me… 1,103 calories 52g fat 52g carbs 89g protein. In the plus column, my StomaphyX feels OK.
StomaphyX Po Op Day 26 We are going to Wine Fest 2008 today so I’ll get in lots of walking again. The weather is beautiful and I am looking forward to this.
Here is my food plan:
B: 1 scoop Syntrex whey nectar fuzzy nael blenderized with 1/2 Profect protein bullet, 1tbs magnesium citrate, 2oz liquid vitamins, ice, 8oz Spring water.
Snack: 1 small cappuccinoL: during the winefest I am going to stroll the grounds and participate in wine tasting with soft cheeses. I have planned to have 1 glass of red (5oz) and 1 glass of white (5oz) and 3oz soft cheese such as brie.
D: 2 servings SF orange jello made with 1 scoop Syntrax fuzzy navel whey nectar
Metabolic: 3oz organic FF black cherry yogurt
This plan provides 984 calories 30g fat 36g carbs 89g protein
StomaphyX Po Op Day 27 At the winefest yesterday there was no cheese available as advertised. So, instead of the cheese I ate a crab cake. On the way home, my husband suggested we get our own cheese. So, we bought some brie, eggplant caponata, and hummus (and other items which I won’t eat but hubby likes) and I had that for dinner (2oz brie, 1/3c caponata, 2 tbs hummus) plus another glass of red wine. Today I am paying for this wonderful indulgence with a temporary 2lb weight gain… I am sure it is temporary and will not fret over it but I must be mindful not to fall into old eating patterns. This is the second slip that I have had in the last week and that IS cause for concern.
I am noticing that recently my stomach is handling soft solids much better. I also have more energy. My StomaphyX surgery must be healing! I am going to try to gradually add more soft type foods to my meals and less protein drinks and see how it goes. Once the ON gold standard whey protein is finished (I have a large tub) I will not be reodering it. It contains a lot of calories and carbs when mixed with soy or milk… my morning protein drink today has almost 300 calories! I’d rather use the Syntrax whey and add a little solid food in the AM… for example, upon rising have 1oz of solid food followed by the Syntrax protein drink 1 hour later. I think this might be best to fight off the starvation mode and will check with my nutritionist to get her POV. With regard to meds, I remain apprehensive about taking any pills and will continue to crush the meds that I have to take.
Here is my meal plan for today. This seems like a lot of food and I am not sure if I can/will eat it all but I’d rather plan for more food than to not have enough and find myself eating something unplanned because I am hungry/starving.
B: 1 scoop ON gold standard whey chocolate blenderized with 4 packets SPlenda, 2 tbs instant coffee crystals, 8oz 2% fat milk (I am out of soy milk), ice.
Metabolic: 1 scoop Syntrax whey nectar strawberry kiwi blenderized with 8oz Spring water, ice, 2oz liquid vitamins, 1tbs magnesium citrate. I also will take sublingual vitB12 and my crushed meds.
L: 3oz brie, 2 tbs hummus garden veg flavor, 1/3c eggplant capponata
D: 2 oz imitation crab (surimi) cooked in broth and drained so it is moist and tender, plus 1 serv SF orange jello made with 1/2 scoop of Syntrax whey nectar fuzzy navel.
Metabolic: 1 serv SF orange jello made with 1/2 scoop of Syntrax whey nectar fuzzy navel.
This food plan provides: 906 calories 34g fats 46g carbs 103g protein
StomaphyX Post Op 4 weeksWeight 185lbs – Goal achieved! I am back down to 185lbs today. I am excited because this is the weight that I was up until Dec 2007. In spite of my efforts to lose those extra pounds since then, I was unsuccessful in reaching my goal until I had the StomaphyX surgery. StomachPhyx accomplished for me in 4 weeks what I could not do on my own in 9 months. My BMI is just below 29 at 28.97. I feel so much better about myself. And better things are still to come as I continue my weight loss journey thanks to StomaphyX.
I also am happy to report that I have been getting in my exercise. I do at least 20 minutes on the elliptical – it’s at a slow to moderate pace but I break a sweat. On the weeknds I have been getting in lots of walking by way of sight seeing. This is a wonderful way to exercise as it doesn’t feel like exercise at all.
Here is my meal plan for today.
B: 1oz brie, 1 tbs hummus garden veggie flavor, 1 tbs eggplant caponata
Metabolic: 1 scoop ON whey protein chocolate added to 8oz of romm temperature coffee, 1.3c half and half, and 5 packets Splenda
L: 1 scoop Syntrax whey nectar mixed with 16oz water, 1 tbs magnesium citrate and 2oz liquid vitamins, plus vitB12 sublingal and my meds, followed 1/2hr later by 2 tablespoons hummus garden veggie flavor
D: 2oz imitation crab sauteed with 1/2 tbs olive oil and 1/3c fresh diced tomato with chopped garlic and chopped fresh basil
Metabolic: 1 scoop Syntrax whey nectar mixed with 16oz water followed 1/2hr later by 2 tablespoons hummus garden veggie flavor
This food plan provides 823 calories 34g fat 43g carbs 87g protein
Outcome of my StomaphyX
I continued to follow this plan of eating, logging my food on FitDay.com, exercising (read some creative ways that I sneak-in exercise), and behavior change through Overeaters Anonymous. In fact, I eventually increased my exercise to an hour of cardio per day. And during the next four weeks, I lost another 12 lbs bringing my weight to the lowest it had ever been since my gastric bypass obesity surgery. My final stats: 173lbs, BMI 27, size 12 jeans, size medium shirt.
When all is said and done, the data StomaphyX has a low success rate in keeping weight off long term. That said, the procedure can be repeated every few years as needed, according to my StomaphyX surgeon (the same surgeon who also performed my gastric bypass surgery). I would certainly get another medical opinion on that before proceeding, but I decided it was worth mentioning here so that you know your options. I am not trying to persuade or dissuade you from having a revision procedure, but rather help you to go into it with eyes wide open. Ultimately, you will make a decision not to proceed, or to proceed and potentially have a new tool for achieving lifetime obesity management.
