New diabetes drug activated with light
A new drug that is being developed to treat type 2 diabetes could be activated with a blue light, according to researchers at the Imperial College London. While the drug is still in the early stages of development, it could provide a much easier way for people with diabetes to better manage their condition.
In a new study, researchers took an existing diabetes drug and adapted it so that it became active only after it was exposed to a blue light. Once active, the drug was able to stimulate the release of insulin from pancreatic cells in a lab dish. Because no actual testing has taken place, the development of the treatment is still in its infancy, but in theory, a person living with diabetes could take a drug and shine a light on their abdomen to activate the drug within the pancreas.
Light activated therapies could target where the drug activity is needed, in this case, the pancreas, and also reduce side effects.
