Is Nexium An Antacid Medication?

I have been prescribed Atelvia (risedronate sodium) and it says not to take at the same time as an antacid medication. The directions say take with breakfast. I take Nexium approx 1 hour before breakfast. Isn't Nexium an antacid?

Nexium is a proton pump inhibitor. It decreases the overall acidity in the stomach by shutting down some of the proton pumps. It is not an "anti-acid." Antacids work by coating the stomach and lowering the acidity of the stomach contents, due to their strong base properties.

The reason it says not to take the Atelvia with an antacid is that it may decrease the absorption of the Atelvia and make it less effective.

It's always a good idea though to ask both your doctor and your pharmacist these questions too when you go back. They may be able to help you come up with an ideal plan for your medication/food timing.
