Can Nipple Color Change Over Time, And Is This A Cause For Concern?

About a year ago, I noticed that the color on both my nipples is uneven - shades of lighter and darker pink. My OBGYN says this is normal, and quite common. But I am still concerned because I don't think my nipples have always looked this way.

Answer

Yes, Meira, like anything else on your body, changes over time aren't uncommon; think wrinkles on your face, age spots on your hands, graying hair, perhaps some extra belly fat... Color changes in both nipples would be incredibly unlikely to have anything to do with breast cancer; but since your OB/GYN tells you it's normal, yet you're still worried - you're perfectly within your rights to seek a second opinion. Ask your OB/GYN to refer you to a breast specialist, OK? Good luck - PJH
