I Have Nipple Pain - Should I Call The Doctor?

I'm 47 and my nipple has been hurting really bad, like someone was sticking a needle down through it. I had a mammogram 6 months ago and everything was fine. I also had an ultrasound last week that showed a small cyst on my ovary. Can you please tell me if I should be worried enough about this pain to call the doctor?

Nipple pain is often related to hormonal issues; and with that cyst on your ovary, you might just be having some hormonal fluctuations, which can definitely cause nipple pain and soreness. Thankfully, your mammogram came back normal. And since nipple pain is seldom a breast cancer symptom, I don't think you need to worry about that.

In general, any breast change (and nipple pain qualifies) should be reported to your doctor if it doesn't resolve within a couple of weeks. That said, there's no need to remain in extreme pain for any longer than necessary. This pain could be due to an incipient infection, which would best be treated ASAP. So call the doctor and see what s/he thinks about coming in.
