Answer

Ann, this doesn't sound at all like a breast cancer symptom, thankfully; it sounds like a skin condition. Have you changed your shower gel or laundry detergent? Been swimming a lot, or maybe wearing a new bra? Your nipples are very sensitive, and can respond adversely to tiny changes in their environment. If you haven't made any changes you know of, perhaps it's just the colder, drier weather of winter.

At any rate, please read our post on nipple issues, which includes lots of useful information about symptoms such as you describe. If the itchiness persists longer than a month, then it would be considered a breast change, and you'd want to see a doctor. You'd want to see a doctor sooner if the itchy area starts to spread quickly, or if your breast or breasts seem infected -; hot, red, swollen, or painful. Hopefully this will just disappear on its own soon. Good luck - PJH
