Occasionally, I will get choked while I eat. Then after coughing and clearing it, I will sneeze several times. What causes the sneezing?

Answer

Getting choked while you eat sounds scary to me. My mother has digestive issues due to scleroderma, and she must always have something to drink while she is eating to help things go down.

I'm not sure about the sneezing though. Is it possible that teeny tiny bits of food might have been coughed up into the vicinity of your sinuses while you are clearing the food? I can imagine that, if so, might make you sneeze so that you clear your nasal passages, too.

Another possibility is that maybe a nerve gets stimulated and that makes you sneeze. This might be something interesting to tell your neurologist at your next appointment. Also, talk about ways you can lessen the choking while you eat.
