Is Ocd Fully Curable

I want to know if OCD is curable fully or not? Is it a genetic disease, what are the causes of OCD?

Answer

Hi Bharat,

You ask some great questions that I don't think have simple answers. First, it seems that the most exciting research about the genetics of OCD has only come out in the past few years. In fact, this article, "OCD Risk Higher When Several Variations in Gene Occur Together," is one of the most interesting I've read recently. In a nutshell, these researchers suggest that OCD is a higher risk for people who have 2 specific genes that are not functioning properly, which has a result of too much serotonin being "shuffled" in places it shouldn't be and therefore not available to do what it's supposed to do!

So right now, no one can pinpoint with exact certainty the cause of OCD, which is probably caused by multiple variables including genetics, stressful evets, and family dynmics. The goal of treatment for OCD is restore people to a fully functioniong, high quality of life. While no therapist can guarantee a "cure" for OCD (or anything else), research shows that treatment is hightly effective.

Treatment outcome is going vary per individual and will be based on a large variety of factors, such as client participation. Most treatment plans include both medication and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, specifically, Exposure with Response Prevention (ERP). ERP is a technique of CBT where a person exposes themselves to a fear (such as germs) and then does not perform the typical response (such as washing). ERP is highly effective, however, other techniques are used as well.
