How Old Do You Have To Be To Get Diagnosed To Hdhd

i told my pediatrician that i thought my 4 year old had adhd and they gave me a number so i called it and they said that my daughter was to young to get diagnosed. So i need to know how old do you have to be to get diagnosed with adhd?? so please help me figure it out before she get any older so i can take care of it now instead of waiting until she get older..

Answer

Thank you for your question and welcome to ADHDCentral.com.

Children can sometimes be diagnosed with ADHD at the age of four, however, many doctors are hesitant to diagnose at this age because many of the behaviors seen in ADHD can also be explained by age, such as short attention span and may be a matter of a child maturing. The diagnostic criteria for ADHD also indicates that behaviors need to be present in two environments (such as home and day care or school). If your child is not attending a school, your doctor may want to wait until whe is in school to see if ADHD symptoms are present in both locations.

I am not sure what number your pediatrician gave you to call, was this a number to a psychologist or psychiatrist? If so, you may be able to call a different professional in your area. It may be that doctor's preference to wait until a child is in school.
