Otc Meds Such As Mylanta While Taking Protonix

I had to switch to generic Protonix due to insurance reasons. However, it has not helped one bit. It's as if I am taking a placebo. I paid for the brand and just filled it today. I have GERD and it is in an uproar. Can I take otc Mylanta while taking Protonix?

Of course, I have to start with saying you should check with your doctor and pharmacist before taking any combination of medications. It can be dangerous to mix medications. That said, many people do take anti-acids while taking H2 Blockers and/or proton pump inhibitors. You may want to space these however in order for your system to be able to properly digest your PPI.

I'm curious about the issue with the generic. Was there any lapse between the time you stopped the brand name and started the generic? Was it in fact, pantoprazole (generic Protonix) that they gave you or did they switch you to a different generic proton pump inhibitor? By definition, generic should be just as effective as brand name but I have heard of many other people who have had the same experience you are having.

Best of Luck - Stephanie
